I, like the rest of America, have binge watched Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. I was inspired to purge and organize and I’m so glad I found this book because it teaches you ways to not only organize, but to sustain that work. The author talks about creating systems that work for your family and how using those systems will help all your hard work organizing, last!

Stephanie Sikora is a genius. Combining her background in the medical field, her knowledge of neuropsychology, psychology, and experience with human behavior, she offers a fresh perspective on creating systems for your home that will help your day to run smoother, become more enjoyable, and with much less hassle. Not only has Stephanie helped me in my personal home and worked through the process of creating some crucial systems, she's also be an incredible catalyst for personal change among my coaching community. Our community members have begun to value their spaces, create systems, enjoy their homes and environments, and make lasting improvements to their daily habits and systems. What Stephanie shares changes lives in such a pleasantly unexpected way. Take the time for yourself so that you can experience the same things we have!

I agree with another reviewer in that I was left wanting. I too, downloaded after hearing the author interviewed on YoungHouseLoveHasAPodcast and was so excited about her approach to clutter and creating systems that I wanted to read more, but the book felt so much like a plug for her business that I got tired of hearing client stories and how clutter affects us. The meat of the book should have been about creating those systems. She has so much experience doing that in her health career and seems like that’s her focus when she works with clients so I would have loved this so much more if it offered more examples or ways to think through creating the systems she refers to. Bummed because I wanted to like this so much more.

'simplified' was a great book for me to read. Though I am not the true target audience for this book (me being a 40something male with no kids) I found it informative, insightful, and motivating. By the middle of the book I had already gone through my own closet (start with a small space!) to clear out those pieces I hadn't worn in years ("But you never know when I will need that velour blazer I loved in my 20s").Stephanie comes at an issue that everyone now a days can relate to with wonderful thoughts and practical ideas.I am glad to have read this, and am recommending it to pretty much everyone in my family.

Simplified is so fantastic!!! I have been trying to purge all the extra items in my home and this really helped support my mindset. I especially love the license she gives to let go of “stuff” that’s tied to us emotionally but may just be sitting in the basement not serving a purpose and not adding value. And the focus she makes on what you and your family can gain by streamlining is golden. Insightful, straightforward and motivational. 🙌🏻👍🏻❤️🥰🤩

I downloaded this after listening to her talk on my favorite podcast (yay YHL!) and I think her ideas and approach are unique and SO smart but I felt like the book was too short and didn’t have enough examples. Her approach is to simplify, systemize, and sustain. But the MOST important step, systemizing was way too short. She gave a few examples of trouble zones for many people (like the kitchen and the entryway) but that was it. I wanted more client stories, more examples, more system ideas for each and every room/zone. And before/after pictures would have added so much. It’s one thing to read about it, but it’s so much more helpful and motivating to SEE the systems in place in real life that work. I hope she writes a new version of the book with much more!

Has your brain ever felt like scrambled eggs as your trying to get the kids ready for school and yourself out the door?? You open the pantry... can’t find the applesauce, you open the Tupperware drawer... all the tops fall out, you turn on your coffee pot and reach for coffee... none left... This is when I realized I needed help! I realized it’s ok that I can’t do it all and I need help! This book offers such useful hints to easily create calmness and organization in your home, life, and your mental capacity. There is nothing more freeing then the weight lifted off you when you have a space around you is filled with calm and organization!

So many things I loved about this book! I love a book that is so easy to read, to the point, great stories and doesn't lose my attention. I have so many self improvement book or books about how to organize that I never finished. This one I couldn't put down and finished in 2 days. Made me think differently about how I go about my day and life has become less stressful, messy and given me time to focus on the things that matter.

There Are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing Up in The Other America, by Alex Kotlowitz

Amazon.com Review

There Are No Children Here, the true story of brothers Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers, ages 11 and 9 at the start, brings home the horror of trying to make it in a violence-ridden public housing project. The boys live in a gang-plagued war zone on Chicago's West Side, literally learning how to dodge bullets the way kids in the suburbs learn to chase baseballs. "If I grow up, I'd like to be a bus driver," says Lafeyette at one point. That's if, not when--spoken with the complete innocence of a child. The book's title comes from a comment made by the brothers' mother as she and author Alex Kotlowitz contemplate the challenges of living in such a hostile environment: "There are no children here," she says. "They've seen too much to be children." This book humanizes the problem of inner-city pathology, makes readers care about Lafeyette and Pharoah more than they may expect to, and offers a sliver of hope buried deep within a world of chaos.

I have to give Alex five stars. This book is well written which makes it such a good read.Mr. Kotlowitz did his research the old fashion way. There is no other way Alex could have gathered the information he had to write this book without boots on ground as well as door to door interviews.Example there is one page where the book reads about a random car passing by with its radio playing a song by Keith Sweat.Fall of 87 through fall of 88, Mr. Sweat ruled the radio airwaves in Chicago.I believe Mr. Kotlowtiz was standing right in the heart of that community interviewing and taking notes when that car passed by playing that song during that time.I prefer the real and this book is as real as it gets.

I started reading this book 2 days ago, and am now about half way done with it. This book is both horrific and inspiring, and I have difficulty putting it down. I am about the same age as the two brothers, which means I was growing up with them, but in another state. To compare my childhood, and what I understood about life at this age, to their childhood and what they understood...well, there isn't a comparison, really. They knew more of life and death and struggle at 11 than I'll likely ever know, and my childhood wasn't rainbows and unicorns.I think everyone should read this book, at least to gain some perspective about some of things the rest of us argue over yet know nothing about.

A fine portrait of a Chicago family surviving but taking wounds from poverty, bureaucracy, violence, bigotry, some wounds arguably self-inflicted but many otherwise. Alex Kotlowitz focuses with genuine friendship on two young brothers and their mom, of an extended family living cramped in criminally mis-managed public housing projects. I haven't read anything else that documents in such close quarter this life I haven't known -- though it was but a few miles from my home, and I'm sure time passing since publication of There Are No Children Here has changed little for people in seemingly permanent financial distress of what LaJoe Rivers and her sons Lafayette and Pharoah experienced.

This book takes you on a bit of a vicarious journey that explores tough choices, disappointment and death in the individual yet collective lives of an impoverished family in Chicago's Horner Homes. By the time i finished the book, I felt that some of my perceptions of impoverished life had changed in that when you see how the system and street-level bureaucrats inadvertently and sometimes purposely use systematic elements such as authority and ill-conceived procedures to hold families down; you begin to realize that while all who live in poverty aren't saints that many of them are trying, despite the system, to get out.Overall, if you really want to know what we are up against as community developers and administrators in impoverished urban American, READ THIS BOOK! I am glad I added it to my library.

Reading this book changed my life, and I can't say that lightly. After reading this book and doing some research on my own, I've started interning and doing campaigns on social policy reform. It's a very simple read with many complex thoughts. I had the privilege of meeting the author and found him to be a humble but brilliant man. This story is not an isolated case and it is so important that we all know about it. Great book.

This book is about a family living in the Henry Horner housing project in Chicago during a couple years in the 80's, primarily dealing with two boys, Lafayette, who's 11 at the beginning of the book and his younger brother Pharoah, who's 9. They live with their mother LaJoe, their siblings and various relatives who come and go, sometimes including their father. It's a rough neighborhood and they have to contend with drug dealers, over crowded schools, random gunfire, poor housing, hostility from the police, amongst other problems. The kids are used to ducking for cover when they hear a gunfight break out outside their apartment. They have a bathtub that never stops running and an oven that doesn't always work. They have friends who are murdered. It's a tough place to grow up but the author gives us their positive moments. Pharoah is an aspiring spelling bee competitor and has a personal refuge in a grassy neighborhood a few blocks away. Lafayette befriends an amateur local dj and helps his mother take care of the household. This is an amazing book. It reminded me of great 19th century authors like Dickens. It's that good. Recommended with no qualifications whatsoever.

Trying to make me feel bad? Sorry, boring read. Tries and fails to pull on the heart strings

I found this to be a telling account of one of America's most shameful faces: allowing our fellow citizens to live under such squalid conditions with no hope in sight. The author depicts realistically the story of one African American family in Chicago with a devoted mother, an impaired and absent father, and kids of indomitable spirit who are buffered by factors not of their own making.Unfortunately, Ronald Reagan's image of welfare mothers driving Cadillacs persist today, perhaps even more so than when he spoke of it in the 80's. But this book explains the realities of good people in horrible circumstances, doing the best they can for their kids and the kids struggling to survive, never mind thrive, in incredibly bad circumstances.I only hope that conditions have improved since this book was written...but I strongly suspect they haven't. Until we help people in these circumstances, America in its own right, will be a third world country, regrettably.

Absolutely solid follow up to Generation One. The ending will drop your jaw a bit I expect and I cannot wait for the next "chapter". The world that Pittacus Lore has created makes it absolutely easy to imagine in your head as you read the story. Been a fan since the beginning and have read all the Novellas associated with this universe love that it has been continued and hasn't lost it's edge.

Seeing this series thru starting from I Am Number Four even if this one started a little slowly. The author’s style to tell multiple tales and fuse them into one is impeccable. As usual it’s a bit annoying that the kids take a prominent role in this series at the expense of the adults not withstanding that’s it’s a YA genre. The author manages to develop multiple characters consistent with their personalities and endemic to their legacies. Then interlaces the manifestation of these legacies in a symbiotic way that requires ingenuity. In my mind the main message is that things are complicated. Rare is the purely evil species. Intentions are mostly faced into the proper direction. But, lack of communication and sound judgment can cause chaos, war, and unnecessary rifts among friends and allies. This can only be recognized from a global point of view which is that of God, or in this case, the reader and author, who is the fashioner of this imaginary our tale.

After wading through too many chapters of boring drivel, the story becomes remarkably reminiscent of Captain America: Civil War. It is apparent that the author has no clearly developed plot in mind as each book seems to have an "off the cuff" feel to it. And the constant use of more and more of the old Loric characters, when this series is supposed to be 'the next generation' seems like a cheap attempt to hold reader interest. There are also too many inconsistencies between books, (like in the first series). For example, in the first book, Rabiya was the Shiekh's niece; in the second book, she is his daughter.

I love all these books. I started with "I Am Number Four", I went through them all, including all the novellas. I was extremely happy when this second series began! I just keep waiting, impatiently, for more.

Just a total thrill ride throughout. In depth characters that you can come to love and root for. Climaxing to an ending that leaves you wanting more and wondering what's about to happen. Truly an awesome read.

Mostly the Human Garde in this one, lot of action, no "charms" or weak science. I'm surprised the series has lasted this long…and there appears to be at least one more book to come. Not great fiction but an OK way to spend an afternoon.

Very good followup to the series reboot. The build up is palpable and foreshadows another truly epic event to change the world yet again as in the first series. High anticipation for the next books. Literally can't wait.

While I found the first book in this series somewhat intriguing, this one is little more than a rehash of the X-Men movie franchise. I won't write any spoilers but it is obvious by now that the Lorien Legacies Reborn series and the Legacy Chronicles are moving into Mutants (Human Garde) versus humans. Nine is Professor X (albeit a not very inspiring Professor X), Einar is Magneto, Isabella is Mystique and you have the usual humans who are too stupid to treat the Human Garde as allies and decide to exploit them instead. I have to say after United as One I find this new storyline depressing. The book is good if you like action, but not great or even original by any means. If you're into the Lorien series you're probably going to read it anyway. I hope the the next books in the series are a little more original. These days I only need to turn on the news to see people disrespect people who are different from them. This novel just wants to club me over the head with that fact.

I just finished reading Bonnie Zieman’s memoir, Fading Out of the JW Cult, and I would highly recommend this book. What makes her story so special is that the protagonist is an experienced psychotherapist. While sharing her story, she explains the psychological manipulation at play in trying to shape her personality. In my opinion, Bonnie’s 2016 memoir is a must-read book for anyone who wants to understand how the Watchtower (intentionally) and family (mostly well-intentioned) manipulates children and teenagers of Jehovah’s Witnesses. If David Letterman was reviewing Bonnie’s memoir on his Late Night Show, he would normally present ten reasons for why the public should read her book. But because we have familial and non-familial (a cult) at play unduly influencing Bonnie, I have decided to enlarge the list to fifteen, which are from 15 to one:15. You will get to meet Bonnie’s paternal grandfather, who was the epitome of a true believer, putting his three young sons in an orphanage so he could proselytize the teachings of Charles Taze Russell in eastern Canada. Not a good omen for Bonnie’s father (familial) and his potential parenting skills14. If you did not already know it, Canadian Watchtower executives do love their body massages as Bonnie’s young, naïve massage therapist mother discovered.13. Believe it or not, Armageddon was just around the corner in 1941, but Bonnie’s parents ignored Judge Rutherford’s warnings not to marry or have children because the end was so close. You will be delighted to learn how they chose to spend their time, instead of preaching doom-and-gloom for non-JW believers at Armageddon.12. Bribing Bonnie with six sticks of grape gum, then just a very little girl, to go out in the Watchtower Street work will leave you wondering, “What was her mama thinking?”11. Bonnie’s mom could have easily been an accessory to a major crime. But with a little luck, and not Jehovah’s invisible hand, “being lucky” saves the day.10. The story of Bonnie’s childhood friend, Bobby, will tear at your heart strings, an experience that proved to be a significant coming-of-age wake-up call for her.9. Bonnie’s baptism experience is an indictment of Watchtower’s blatant use of undue influence on children by JW parents. You will love Bonnie’s mom, but not on this occasion, although it’s really Watchtower’s psychological manipulation.8. If you think that you can trust good JW young men to behave on dates, one chapter in her book will definitely change your mind.7. In a chapter called The Slap, Bonnie and her father awaken to the reality that dysfunction is a major bi-product of Watchtower’s culture, although neither of them knew it at the time; the invisible hand of Watchtower at work.6. A chapter about Bonnie getting married ‘properly’ according to a died-in-the-wool JW elder in her husband’s family could only happen in JW La-la Land.5. If you have the misguided belief that Watchtower leaders are all kind, loving and benevolent, Bonnie describes a dinner scene with a circuit oversee that should jolt you to your senses. Unfortunately, behind-the scenes behavior like this are not that uncommon because of the nature of Watchtower’s pyramid-like culture.4. If you think Watchtower’s long-time VP, Fred Franz, was not crazy, Bonnie will set you straight several times in her book. Fred Franz, I believe, was plighted with a severe case of Asperger’s Syndrome, and he was allowed to set policy and prophesy future events for Watchtower without any accountability.3. When a person leaves Watchtower, he or she must be prepared to negotiate a long and challenging learning curve if they want to find and claim their authentic identity. Bonnie’s book is an excellent roadmap to show readers how it can be done in spite of massive amounts of misinformation and emotional abuse.2. For me personally, the total lack of human feelings and emotions (the cult identity) by hard-core true-believing JWs is brought home to roost in chapter 36. While reading this chapter, I was reminded that anyone who chooses to attend and confess at a JW Judicial Committee Meeting should never go alone. A good attorney and someone from the press should be there with them, although if those were the conditions, it could mean the Waterloo for these kinds of Watchtower-style kangaroo courts and sinister undue influence.1. In Chapter 2, Bonnie tells the story about The Gift, a talk delivered by a District Overseer at a 1978 Montreal convention. It was an unplanned gift, that had it been filmed live and preserved, it would have brought Watchtower to its knees and shown the public how Watchtower psychologically manipulates its members. You can read all about “the gift” and much more in Bonnie Zieman’s excellent memoir, Fading Out of the JW Cult.

What a great memoir! Not only was it a story of her life but, Ms. Zieman also included her training as a therapist in this book. It helped me with some guilt I didn't even realize I had from leaving the JW cult. Thank you Bonnie!

I was never a babtized witness but was raised as one. Virtually my whole family is a Jehovah's Witness , and this book truly describes the guilt and brainwashing one endures. As an adult, I sometimes thought about studying and becoming a witness like the rest of my family, as like you said, once your indoctrinated, it is hard to ever put out of your mind. However, this nagging, deep within my heart, could never let me be secure in my decision and instead raised mariads of questions that could never be answered. However, always feeling like I never had enough knowledge of the "truth" still made me want to learn more and see where the witnesses and my family have the practices they have and if they really are from the Bible. This so-called religion has always been a large dark cloud over me. I was so glad I never became a babtized witness! This book is a true eye opener and shows that my feelings are perfectly normal, and the questions I have always had, now have some answers. Thank you for this amazing book.

It was very instructive about JW history and deeply personal about the difficulties of being raised as a JW.

I, too, was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. This is truly a journey of healing, mind, body, soul, and yes, life. Freedom to use the gift that all of us were given, choice, freedom to decide what we want to do! Every day! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with others who have also lost family and friends through unnatural family shunning.

From the moment I started reading I was 100% captivated! What a fascinating and disturbing memoir! I found that I could relate to your life story in so many ways. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to share your story... a story that will help so many of us survivors feel not so alone :)Thank you Bonnie for your bravery!Daisy

Being raised in a jw. Home. Born in. This book helped me see all of the cult feelings I thought it had but was to afraid to say. Thank you Bonnie for sharing.

Amazing story of a brave woman.

The Art of Looking: How to Read Modern and Contemporary Art, by Lance Esplund

Review

"[A] wise, wonderful new book...Life is busy and art is demanding, but reading Esplund prods us to take the aesthetic plunge, to commit to a James Turrell light sculpture or a forbiddingly monumental Richard Serra art space the same way we do to a Rembrandt, a Berthe Morisot, a Picasso."―Washington Post"Encouraging, intelligent, and thought-provoking."―New York Journal of Books "Everybody who cares about the art of our time will want to own this brilliant book. Lance Esplund brings ease, elegance, and incisiveness to his passionate encounters with creative spirits old and new. His essential belief, presented in prose by turns tough-minded and tenderhearted, is that contemporary practice must be grounded in timeless, universal values. The Art of Looking shines a strong and steady light. We need it."―Jed Perl, author of Calder: The Conquest of Time and New Art City: Manhattan at Mid-Century"Esplund's conversational new book aims to coach its readers through the slow process and at-times-difficult experience of seeing...[He] is at his best when he is able to reach to the past, and to the timeless traditions and values that all successful art shares in."―New Criterion "This important, unconventional book begins as a terrific first-aid manual, highly accessible and full of great common sense, for those for whom modern or contemporary art is puzzling or off-putting. It evolves into a dazzling, jargon-free display of the exercise of slow, close, curious looking at all kinds of art. Those seeking relief from the plague of art-speak will find it in this insightful, unashamedly personal volume."― John Elderfield, chief curator emeritus of painting and sculpture, the Museum of Modern Art "In a friendly and conversational tone, Esplund shares his insights honed during a long career...Inviting and informative."―KirkusPresenting itself as an introductory volume to help orient beginners, The Art of Looking opens with a brisk, illuminating historical sweep before zooming in on specific works by ten dissimilar artists spanning nearly a century. An intensive exercise in meticulous observation and close reading, the book offers a personal overview that should interest art-world sophisticates as well as newcomers to the field. ―Elizabeth C. Baker, editor-at-large, Art in America"The Art of Looking is a wonderful book, filled with remarkable insights about experiencing whatever it is that we mean by the word 'art.' Whether it is Balthus and the Me Too Movement or walking through Richard Serra's enormous curving rust colored sculptures -- there is always something new and exciting to be discovered."―Robert Benton"If you've never understood contemporary art, or fear you've understood it all too well, then this book is ready to be your secret friend. In lucid prose that has the loft of poetry, Lance Esplund lifts the burden of 'art appreciation' to reveal that the subject of all great art is how it appreciates you for the way you look at it. His own encounters with exemplary work-by Joan Mitchell, James Turrell, and Marina Abramovic among others-are related in terms so complete, courageous, and physically convincing they make you want to see art as he has seen it, a giant step toward seeing it for oneself."―Douglas Crase, author of The Revisionist"Despite dramatic shifts in art over the last century, [Lance Esplund] empowers and enables us to appreciate it with 'new eyes.' Rather than perceiving new art as inaccessible or irrelevant, Esplund gently encourages us to trust our own tastes, feelings and opinions."―Detroit Free Press

Wonderful book. I purchased this as a gift for my mother. After reading the intro I couldn't put it down and wound up getting another copy for myself. Anyone with even a cursory interest in the arts will find useful and often fascinating information in this book. It will literally change the way you look at art.

I enjoyed the book. It fits well into an art criticism void: readable, well paced, makes the large connections for the reader across the centuries. But the images he decided best demonstrated his points, the ones he featured in the plates, are all male artists. All. Male. Artists.All.That significantly diminishes this writer's otherwise good work. What was the writer, the editor, the publisher all thinking? This reflects poorly on everyone, at each stage of this book. Do better.

Mr. Esplund writes compellingly about modern, contemporary (and not so contemporary) art, and really helps you to understand how to approach it. He discusses the "language" of art and how artists think, and he beautifully and earnestly describes his own experiences in front of art. It helps to look up the artworks he mentions (if they're not in the book) to see what he's getting at. This book is full of deep thinking and wonderful insights.

This is a wonderful book and it should be required reading for art students. In the age of social media people are loosing their ability to look and focus (and to read). Esplund reminds us that painting isn't about craft and "realism" but instead about experience and reflection.

Very helpful, full of information, with lots of little tips that aren't mentioned in the many tutorials I've watched/read. However, for whatever reason, none of the links to video demonstrations of techniques are operative. I read though the book using kindle app on my tablet, then came to see if the links would work reading it on Amazon's kindle cloud - still no go. Five stars if the link issue can be resolved!

Great guide for acrylic pouring! Lots of awesome analogies that helped me understand what's going on

I liked the information but would really enjoy viewing the videos if they were available. Will they be available soon?
