A wonderfully different book on wolves that approaches them from a "Zen" perspective if you will. A must read for pro wolf people. And all the wolf hating ranchers would also benefit from reading this book. Wolves are thinking, feeling, intelligent animals. As a rancher myself who practices non-lethal means to effect co-existence with predators, I have long followed the Dutcher's work. Their books along with Carl Safina's Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel, should be required reading for anyone interested in wolves, supportive of wolves, or yes, even hating wolves. Because after reading those books, no sensitive human could be capable of blanket-hate of these magnificent animals. This book is a wonderful addition to anyone's library and I highly recommend it.
So much truth and incite into wolves. Figures that humans are intent on continued ignorance and continual destruction to the natural world. We will never learn that the universe does not revolve around us. A must read for people of conscientious and compassion.
I am loving this book, even though I have been brought to tears many times while reading it. I have loved wolves since childhood (I'm a baby boomer....so that's a long time). I admire their beauty, intelligence and nobility. This book speaks to those qualities which are so evident to anyone with eyes to truly see and emotions to feel. These beings taught our early ancestors by example to hunt and live in groups. Fortunately, they are still with us despite humankind's efforts at species genocide......but only just. It is humankind that has thrown nature out of balance by putting themselves and their livestock in wolf territory. Even my 10 year old niece says "Cows and sheep don't belong there. Wolves were there first." If the "beef" industry and wolf haters have it their way wolves will once again be on the brink of extinction. More and more we read and hear of the horrible slaughter being carried out by ignorant, backward, inhumane humans. Sad, how people need scapegoats for their own fear and guilt.I'm grateful to the Dutchers for their tireless efforts to educate and inform the public about these magnificent and most admirable creatures.
Excellent description of lessons we can/must learn and live from Nature. I envision this as a basis for middle school lesson plans featuring each chapter title, asking each class member to write a brief description of what that title means to them, then read the chapter to the class. There are recommended videos as well to enhance each theme. Encouraged me to re-read my copies of Never Cry Wolf and The Man Who Lives with Wolves
I really appreciated the insights into wolf behavior that the Authors so generously shared - the good, the bad and the ugly parts of how they were able to achieve their goals. It was particularly interesting to me to gain an understanding of how this was done in a somewhat controlled environment and that even though they weren't full on 'petting' the wolves, that their human presence around the pack had the impact of actually making the wolves curious about and used to being around people- that part was concerning, but knows that more good than harm was done in order to further the understanding of these iconic creatures. It was a relief to learn how their struggle to find a home territory for the wolves after the study was done was successfully accomplished. You could feel their painful selfless concern surrounding the end of their study and the sincerity of their efforts to give those wolves they got to know so well a chance to live harmoniously in a wildlife territory vs. the threatening alternatives.
I loved this book. It gave me such an insight into the lives of wolves. They are so smart and beautiful. Shooting them makes no sense. It destroys everything. We try to live in harmony with the foxes and coyote in our area.
This book was memorable, with so many tender, human-like adventures with the wolves. A book every child should read. It made me laugh, weep, wonder at the intelligent animals who have so many human tendencies and yet, so like man’s best friend the dog. I loved the book.
If you love wolves as I do but know you'll never actually occupy the same space as them, this is as close as I will ever get. I am grateful for this book to give me the experience of feeling close to these magnificent animals.
