Author Larry R. Matthews has been writing about Northern California history since 1998 and is the author of Arcadia's The Building of the Oroville Dam book. Author Scott C. Roberts enjoys uncovering local history and exploring historical sites and also helped in the research for the Oroville Dam book. Some images in this book came from various museums and historical societies. A large portion of the images were contributed by those who resided in the communities covered by this book.

Having lived near a large lake created by the TVA in North Carolina, the concept of communities drowned by the rising waters of man made lakes has always intrigued me. Seldom has the construction of a dam carried such far reaching consequences.The book begins with pictures of the construction of the Big Bend Powerhouse in the 1900s. Later we see it about to disappear beneath rising water in 1968, Many other unique scenes in the book met the same fate, only to be revealed through the irony of a major drought over the past few years.Rising water has once again covered them, hence the great value of a book like this.I know from experience how much effort is required to produce one of these Arcadia books. The authors have done a great job of bringing these vanished landscapes back to life. Highly recommended.
What an interesting read.There is commentary from the actual residents who were displaced by the project over fifty years ago and the book is loaded with pictures of these small mountain communities that were removed for the legendary California Water Project lake that was the center piece of a water project that rivaled the TVA.

Enjoyed the book but a more in depth portrayal of the life in these communities would be great. Perhaps a sequel??
This is a fantastic little book. Bidwell Bar was a favorite summer place growing up. Knowing more of the history of the area was grand.
So full of great info about my home town.
