Great book, using it for a scene painting class with a large mix of non-artists and everyone has had great results. Easy to follow instructions really help and the book is filled with funny tips, and if you get the spiral version you get 2 removable plastic pages so your pages are protected! Just wipe off the plastic, put them on the next two, and your book is protected. This is especially useful if you intend to sell it back.
This book is horrendous. All computer generated images, basic stamped patterns that no real designer would ever provide (unless they are a student designer). The projects are boring, save the final project which is shown on the cover. As another reviewer stated, this is an insult to the art of scenic painting.
good basic manual for scenic paint. covers most of the basic skills one needs in theatre. like other reviewers i am bothered by the photoshopped illustrations - the book would be so much better with REAL photos
I ordered this book for my Drama: Stagecraft high school course and it has proven to be a winner. The instructions are clear and the illustrations step-by-step make a huge difference to first time scenery painters. We have used at least four difference painting techniques on a Victorian set for "Angel Street." Thanks for such a practical book!
I needed this book for school and the schools book store never got it in so I had to order it and I really love this book even though it is for school it has a lot of great trick for painting scenery and making things look real and since I love art and was able to follow the book really easily I got an easy A in the class.
This book contains no scenic painting. Every image is made in Photoshop, and not well. A scene painting book should contain real examples of painted work. The educational value of this book is nil. If you want a real text, use the Crabtree book or Lynn Pektal's book. I was excited when this first came out only to be rudely surprised that the author seemed to subtract from the body of knowledge about painting, rather than add. The book is pretty and well produced, but you can't judge a book by it's shiny cover and spiral binding.
I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer - there is not one single example of actual scene painting in this book - it's all Photoshop!!The idea of the book is good, the subject of the projects is appropriate for a beginning scenic artist or scenic-art class, the instructions are pretty easy to follow, so why, oh why, didn't the author actually PAINT and photograph the examples rather than Photoshoping them?
I just love this book. I am not artistic and still draw stick people but with the instructions in this book, I was able to paint a background that turned out beautiful.
