I bought this book because I have already walked some of the New Zealand "Great Walks" (Milford Track, Heaphy Track) and am planning to walk more of them. I enjoyed reading about Gillian Orrell's experiences walking all nine of the Great Walks -- and was particularly impressed by her character. Although she ran into quite a bit of rain and difficult conditions, she persisted, learned rapidly from her experiences and from other trampers, and throughout shows a remarkable appreciation for the beauty of New Zealand, its forests, mountains, rivers and wildlife. She enjoyed herself, interacted well with other walkers and was one of those relatively rare people who are sufficiently confident and competent to be able to enjoy walking on their own. The book focuses almost entirely on the experience of walking each of the New Zealand Great Walks, with only passing references to other attractions. The book is best suited to people, who like me, are also interested in walking some of the Great Walks and would like to read an intimate account of one woman's experiences doing just that. Although the book was first published some years ago, much of the information about the tracks and huts is still entirely relevant since these have not changed much over the year.
