It's okay. Good cookbook but I think calling it 'Authentic Recipes from the Ranch and the Range' implies it is more rustic and actually authentic than it is. There are very 'modern' spices and ingredients that I don't really see being available on a chuck wagon. But as far as just a recipe book, it's okay.
This combination cookbook and cowboy cook lore book is fascinating. You get the recipes of the "coosies" who ran the chuckwagons on the great cattle drives.THe stories are intriguing. The recipes are interesting. The typeface and color of the typeface is ridiculous. I mean, sepia-colored type.THe designer is not one who uses cookbooks or reads at night.By the way, this is dangerous bedtime reading. It just makes you want to eat.If it ever is reprinted, I hope it is done so one can read it.
If you like cowboy lore. If you enjoy a history lesson. If you love to cook or experiment with some old recipes made with 'modern',available, ingredients...this is the cookbook for you. The pictures alone make the book a great purchase.

I really like the content of this book. the stories and recipes. however it does not rate 5 stars because it is not "user friendly"; it is very small print and light brown print on beige paper.
Too many good recipes in this book not to own a copy. I've looked at other cook books that claim to have cowboy recipes. Not one is as good as this one.
Good book, good service
I've had this book for years , the recipes are very good, have made at least half of them the macaroni salad is perfect! overnight coffee cake is just like the little crumb cakes from the store if you bake them in a cupcake pan, ranch dressing perfect! perini's steak rub! Asian grilled chicken, peach cobbler, and lots more for the grill camp fire and the oven, and the stories loved to read about the west and photo too.
