Review
“Slipping into a Betsy book is like slipping into a favorite pair of well-worn slippers: It’s always a pleasure to live in Betsy’s world for a little while, to experience her simple joys, but also her (thankfully short-lived) sorrows.” (Meg Cabot)“There are three authors whose body of work I have reread more than once over my adult life: Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and Maud Hart Lovelace. We fell in love....and wanted to know from year to year what was happening to them. Betsy-Tacy fans never die. They just re-read.” (Anna Quindlen)“I re-read these books every year, marveling at how a world so quaint--shirtwaists! Pompadours! Merry Widow hats!--can feature a heroine who is undeniably modern.” (Laura Lippman)“I read every one of these Betsy-Tacy-Tib books twice. I loved them as a child, as a young adult, and now, reading them with my daughter, as a mother. What a wonderful world it was!” (Bette Midler, actor and singer)“Some characters become your friends for life. That’s how it was for me with Betsy-Tacy.” (Judy Blume, bestselling author)“The Betsy-Tacy books were among my favorites when I was growing up.” (Nora Ephron, Academy Award-nominated director)“I am fairly certain that my independent, high-spirited grandmother must have had a childhood similar to Betsy Ray’s…As I read..., I felt that I was having an unexpected and welcome peek into Granny’s childhood—a gift to me from Maud Hart Lovelace.” (Ann M. Martin, creator/author of The Baby-sitter's Club)“Family loyalty and the devotion of friends to one another, which for me are the defining characteristics of the Betsy-Tacy stories.” (Esther Hautzig, Award-winning author, former Director of Children’s Book Promotion for Thomas Y. Crowell Co., and former publicist for Betsy’s Wedding in 1955)“I truly consider BETSY AND TACY GO DOWNTOWN to be the finest novel in the English language! I will never love any other books as much as I love the Betsy-Tacy books.” (Claudia Mills, children’s book author, winner of National Book Award and Golden Kite Award)“I grew up 30 miles north of Mankato, and trips to town were filled with mystery and magic, because I was walking the same streets that Betsy and Tacy once walked. The Betsy-Tacy books...., more than any other books, fed my dream of becoming a writer one day.” (Jill Kalz, 2008 MN Book Awards Readers' Choice Award winner)

I read the Betsy Books by Maud Hart Lovelace from the library years ago - but even then, it was getting hard to find them all. And if you're going to read about Betsy (along with Tacy and Tib, of course!), you have to read ALL about her. So I was delighted to find this two-in-one edition of Heaven to Betsy and Betsy in Spite of Herself at Amazon and add it to both my paperback library and my Kindle library (for a very nominal additional price, thanks to Amazon's great Matchbook program). I would recommend it as a gift for any pre-teen or young teenager - Betsy, I think, has staying power. She's ever and always interested in BOYS (or at least, she's interested in getting them interested in her, which almost every young girl can related to) - yet she's got career aspirations and a loving family as well as true-blue friends that help keep her grounded. Yes, they're a little old-fashioned, but they aren't overly sentimental, either. Betsy makes plenty of mistakes as she enters high school - but she learns from them. I recommend the remaining four books of the series just as highly (Betsy was a Junior/Betsy and Joe, another 2 volume set, takes Betsy through high school, and Betsy and the World/Betsy's Wedding into young adulthood). So journey back to a slightly simpler time and enjoy being part of Betsy's Crowd.
Betsy Ray and her friends are in high school now. This volume covers Betsy's freshman and sophomore years in Deep Valley High School, and comes with bonus information about the author and the real life originals of the characters.Boys, clothes, gossip, teachers, who's in and who's out, putting off your schoolwork, dances, food, and other forms of fun fill their high school days. Who will Betsy go out with on any given weekend? Who will ask her to the dance first? What will she and her friends get up to on their own? Will Betsy be true to herself as a writer, or try to act different to attract boys? Will it work? All this is set in the first decade of the 20th century, when cars and phones and such were new. People walked most places they wanted to go, or took the train. Clothes were made to order by seamstresses. But even if they looked different, people don't change much. This is the best picture of how high school feels that I know of.So come live through it with Betsy, Tacy, Tib, Irma, Winona and more. Not to mention Tony, Cab, Phil, LLoyd, and a host of others.
I'm so enjoying re-reading the Betsy-Tacy books I enjoyed so much as a child. This book arrived in great condition, and the cover is charming!
I read Laura Ingalls Wilder and Anne of Green Gables, and loved both, but it was Betsy Ray who really stole my heart! I read each of the "high school and beyond" books over and over when I was in high school, and continued to read them into college and beyond. Betsy's life resonated with me -- from her concern over her social status to her love of writing; her house as a haven for other teenagers to her guilt over times she was not true to herself. I used her a role model -- sometimes of what not to do! (Procrastinate! Neglect what gives you joy, even if it isn't "popular." Keep your feelings hidden -- you'll end up at the most important dance of the year with the wrong boy!) I learned that decisions have consequences, and that it was worthwhile to think things through a bit. The fact she "lived" so many decades before me didn't matter -- human nature doesn't change that much, and setting limits with boys, seriously considering basic faith beliefs, neglecting schoolwork, and gathering with friends for all kinds of good times (dancing, sledding, talking, plotting, ...) -- are issues that ring true at any time period! I liked that she was a "typical teenager," with problems and silliness and fun times and worry and heartbreak and joy. I especially liked that Betsy was always, always available. She was a comfort read, she was a steady friend during the sometimes trying times of adolescence, and it was -- and is -- always wonderful to open the pages and walk into the Rays' house again. (Could you pass me a muffin? Oh, and some fudge!) (And if you like reading about Betsy, make sure you read "Emily of Deep Valley" -- my personal favorite! -- and "Carney's House Party," too!)
I have always loved the Betsy/Tacy series and when I saw all the books were on Kindle, I went a bit crazy. I have been rereading them all and they are just as delightful as I remember from my childhood.
The Betsy Tacy books were my favorites when growing up. I just bought a compete set for my niece, who is 9 years old, and am hoping she grows to love them as much as I do. These books shaped my life, and who I am, in more ways than I can count. If you haven't read them yet, it's time! The Betsy-Tacy books are delightful no matter what your age. They are a throw back to the early 1900's with timeless messages for the modern day world. (I love these books so much that I even named a room at my B&B, The Blue Belle Inn, after one of my favorites - Heaven to Betsy.)
I love reading this series because it takes me away into a happy time of life. Betsy and her friends enjoy adventure, romance, and funny moments together. What I love is that the stories are based on real life events and people in the turn of the century. It's like discovering a time capsule. These books make me wish for simpler times when people spent their days enjoying each other's company.
Great condition for a used book. I love this series and just wanted to have to read when the news is crazy.
