From School Library Journal

Gr 4 Up—Every inch of this book is expertly executed. In the first section, "Story of a Nation," the author explains in a succession of tidy spreads how the United States was shaped socially, politically, and geographically by major forces, such as the arrival of the English in North America. Following this foundation building, each state is presented in its own gorgeous four-page chapter. In addition to incorporating the expected material regarding state emblems and population stats, the work includes a concise history for each state, an illustrated time line, and a detailed map. The book is packed with facts, all of which are presented in neatly phrased narratives or in bright, eye-catching sidebars. While much of the material presented is of the report-ready, workaday variety—topography, industry, tourist attractions—some details add narrative sparkle. In keeping with National Geographic tradition, the illustrations in this title are first-rate. The bulk of images are full-color photographs. Archival drawings fill in design gaps. VERDICT A first purchase.—Jennifer Prince, Buncombe County Public Libraries, NC

This book used to be called Our Fifty States (or something very similar). It was updated and the title changed. I hope the word "encyclopedia" doesn't scare off potential buyers. It is nothing like the "encyclopedias" I remember as a child. Colorful pictures, graphics, and short readings should be very appealing to youth (and adults) alike. I look forward to using it when I teach a class on the states. If you want to know more about our country's states - this is a wonderful resource.

I bought this for my 5 yr old who is in love with Stack the Stacks app and the Scrambled States of America book and game. Specifically, we use it for finding state info in the app mentioned at this point, but it's full of great resources for both my children as they grow. It's big but that helps them lay on the floor with it open as they look through. It's nice to be able to teach them how to answer a question without technology and using good old fashioned research which encourages so many more skills and much more critical thinking than typing into google each time.

Purchased this book for my children. It's packed with great information and colorful photos. Great way to teach anyone (children and adults both) about the different states.

My daughter LOVES these books! She's a bit of a know it all now Hahaha! Both she and I are very proud. These are wonderful reference books for the home.

We bought this to go along with our Homeschool curriculum. It is wonderfully comprehensive and our boys love all of the pictures.

Great book for kids and adults who never paid attention in class.

A good atlas for a child of 10-12 years old. Excellent maps.

Great book but bottom of book’scover was torn and pages seemed wrinkled like the had been around moisture or water damaged
