Very cute book, like some of the new art, it's honestly just what it says it is a adventure book.So if your a ducktale fan looking for lore, this book is not for you.
If you have a Ducktales fan in the house, this is a fun book to consider. It's packed full of fun images from the 2017 Ducktales Series and it features a lot of interesting facts and activities packed inbetween some cartoon fluff. As much as I dream to have night vision goggles, reason to find a hidden trap door, or to wear a hot dog suit to torment a hungry sea faring buddy, I'm unlikely to ever come across those scenarios. In between the fun fluff is a lot of interesting facts and sound advice such as telling a parent before heading out on a adventure. The book is full of bright and colorful illustrations, and was really fun to read. The only quip I have about this book is on pages 90 & 91 (the Sneak, Don't Speak chapter). The image on that page is highly pixelated, and unless that was intentional somewhere in the comic book series, I believe they sized that particular image incorrectly. Overall, this was a fun and surprisingly informative book that will spark a little creative, an interest in learning more, and a sense of adventure in your kid's minds. The book's chapters include:ADVENTURING BASICSPack Your Adventure Bag (pack sunscreen, water, bandages - and tell an adult you're adventuring)The Perfect Clubhouse (include night vision goggles - silly fluff)The Basic Knots (How to tie a clove hitch and timber hitch)Untie Stubborn Knots (this was actually pretty clever, twist the rope then push though - I tried, it works!)Document Your Adventures (simple scrapbooking and journal writing for kids)First Aid (check surroundings, call for help, care for victim; how to treat a small cut)Famous Adventurers & Explorers (a little info on Jacques Cousteau, Amelia Earhart, Neil Armstrong, Isabella Bird)ADVENTURING OUTDOORSHow to Find True North (using a compass, shadow method, check the sun)How to Read a Topographical Map (understanding contour lines)Make Your Own Snow Goggles (using cardboard)Look Underwater (using a tube, plastic wrap, and rubber bands)Pan for Gold (using a pie pan)Adventuring Rocks (info on igneous, metamorphic, and sendimentary rocks)Fossil Facts (info on fossils)Curious Critters (simple info on some insects)HIGH SEAS ADVENTURESPrepare for a Day at Sea (have water, sunscreen, and a hot dog costume)Morse Code (how to decipher morse code)Talk like a Sea Captain (ahoy, hardtack, landlubber, and nautical terms like starboard, stern, etc)Maneuver a Canoe (accurate info, no pictures so hard to understand unless you've rowed before)Voyaging with Vikings (simple info on Vikings)MYSTERIOUS ADVENTURESSolving a Mystery (putting together clues on a bulletin board)Detect Secret Doors (check for irregularities, breezes, a key..)Enhancing your Senses (Eat healthy, stay away from screens all day, stay away from loud noises, etc)Explore in the Dark (use a flashlight, a long string, chalk marking your path)Check for Traps (look carefully, don't touch anything)Let's Hunt for a Ghost! (use a recorder, a digital camera, other fun fluff)Sneak Don't Speak (wear soft clothing, walk close to walls, walk on fresh grass)ADVENTURING AROUND THE WORLDEncountering New People (smile, ask a questions, offer them new foods)Dress Right for Any Environment (warm stuff in cold environments, cool clothes in hot environments)Foreign Language Basics (words in Greek, Egyptian Arabic, and Scottish!)Wonders Around the World (info on Ancient Egypt, Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, Roman Colosseum)Great Scot! (A little info on Scrooge McDuck's homeland of Scotland - golf & kelpies, Edinburgh Castle, Loch Ness Monster)Ancient Greece (info on Greek Gods, Art, Olympics)ADVENTURE ACTIVITESMonster! (Blindfolded keep away)Capture the Flag (capture the flag)Outdoor Scavenger Hunt (scavenger hunt)Follow and FindTreasure Hunt
My children found this book surprisingly un-compelling. I have an 11-year-old, an 8-year-old, and an almost-6-year-old, all of whom are avid readers who enjoy having adventures...and I have been completely unable to get any of them to engage with this book. They've all flipped through it with a general reaction of "meh."The idea is good, but it seems to have had somewhat sloppy execution. The collection of topics included, is a little weird and all over the place. There are sections for Adventuring Basics (tying knots, first aid, how to pack for your adventures, etc.), Adventuring Outdoors, High Seas Adventures, Mysterious Adventures, Adventuring Around the World, and Adventurous Activities, with "chapters" ranging from as practical as "how to find true North" to as dubiously useful as "make your own snow goggles" and more "head knowledge"-type topics such as "fossil facts."Some of the chapters are more tightly-themed than others, but mostly they need some work. The Adventuring Around the World section, for instance, contains the following chapters:Encountering New PeopleDress Right for Any EnvironmentForeign Language BasicsAncient Egypt FactsWonders Around the WorldGreat Scot!Ancient GreeceThat isn't remarkably cohesive. The first half seems to be contemporary; the second half seems to be history-based. And, frankly, little of it sounds vastly enticing to a kid without better context. The design is equally "busy." Every page is chock-full of colors and words and images. There are at least three fonts in regular use throughout the book, although it comes across as more like five because of how they're used. There are multiple image styles (a bold, cartoony look for the characters overlaid on an antiquey map-style background. Photos, diagrams, etc. are mixed in, as well, in various places. Overall, there's just a LOT going on, with little by way of obvious visual cues of how to move across a page layout, so I think the kids just kind of get lost in it.
Are your kids spending too much time with their faces glued to computer screens? Here is the book for you. It contains dozens of projects that are fun and educational and none of them involve computers. The projects build on each other, but are also somewhat independent. Each one requires only a couple of pages of reading (with lots of pictures mixed in), so even younger kids can enjoy them. Many of the projects will require parental cooperation, which is great. Pick a couple of projects and spend the weekend working on them with your kids.
Unless your child is a big Duck Tales fan, I wouldn't recommend this over other similarly themed books like the well-known Dangerous Book for Boys/Girls. It very well-illustrated, packed with lovingly animated and brightly colored pictures throughout, but the content is a real mixed bag. Some of it feels purely educational (Famous Adventurers and Explorers, Ancient Greece, etc.). Some of it is so situation-dependent that readers may find it meaningless (making your own snow goggles, for example, assumes you live in a place where it snows; maneuvering a canoe requires a canoe, etc.). Some of it is fun and appropriate for everyone (basic knots, finding true north, etc.). To me, it just seems too scattered to really be a home run for most kids. Recommended only for die hard Duck Tales fans. Other adventure seekers have better options for inspiration.
